Conflict and inequality

In many contexts, inequality spikes during and immediately after violent conflict.

With most protracted violent conflict now taking place within a country (as opposed to between countries), increasing inequality feeds into and is reinforced by violent conflict.

Violent conflict exacerbates many types of inequality, including in relation to gender as women and girls are often targeted and are the vast majority of victims of SGBV.

On the other hand, research also shows that gender equality is a predictor of a society’s overall peacefulness. While there is no causal relationship between inequality and conflict, they are closely tied to each other, and any effort to address inequality must also seek to address the structural causes of conflict.
